Jefferson Parish's newest Mardi Gras season organization, the all-female Krewe of Pandora that made its debut this year on Lundi Gras , won't parade in 2017. Instead the krewe will spend a year "to regroup" and resume parading in 2018, a spokeswoman said Friday (Dec. 2).
Pandora was scheduled to put on Jefferson's lone 2017 Lundi Gras parade on Feb. 27. But captain Julie Lea said the organization's leadership thinks it needs more planning time. She said the parish govermment granted the organization's request for a one-year sabbatical.
"Our inaugural parade was beautiful and a monumental achievement for the Krewe of Pandora," she said. "Pandora would be better served to take a year off to allow it to better meet the needs of our members and the community.
"We're not only a parading organization. Pandora is also a social organization that holds events for members. We asked for a year off to allow us time to present first-class events, in conjunction with an outstanding parade. We look forward to returning the traditional Jefferson Parish route in 2018."
Lundi Gras has been a difficult day for Metairie parades for several years. The spot was long held by the Krewe of Zeus , Jefferson's oldest parading organization, but after a protracted clash with parish officials, Zeus' permit was suspended in 2015 and the krewe has yet to return.
With Pandora's exit, Jefferson now will have eight float parades and two truck parades for 2017 Carnival.
